Here’s a list of things you should avoid when selecting your hand sanitizers and why.

Methanol
- FDA has warned that many hand sanitizers labeled to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) were actually tested positive for methanol contamination.
- Methanol is toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested, and it can be life-threatening.
- Methanol can dehydrate the skin and result in dermatitis to the affected region.
- Other effects of methanol exposure can cause nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death.
- So make sure to select hand sanitizers that are approved by governing bodies to ensure good quality control.

False and Misleading Labels
- Unproven claims that they can prevent the spread of viruses such as COVID-19
- False claims that they can provide prolonged protection (e.g., up to 24 hours)
- Fraudulently marketed as “FDA-approved”. FDA does not approve any hand sanitizers.
- So make sure to select hand sanitizers that are sold by regulated brands and companies.

Insufficient Amount of Alcohol
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends consumers to use an alcohol-based sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol (ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol)
- So make sure to select hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol. If they don’t, discard them, regardless of how cheap they are or how good they smell or feel.
