What You Should Avoid In Your Hand Sanitizer

Covid-19 Death Guidelines Health Information Sanitizer Tips

Hand sanitizers have officially become a necessity since the COVID-19 pandemic. As the usage of hand sanitizers grows, the understanding of the things and ingredients to avoid when choosing your hand sanitizer becomes all the more important.

Here’s a list of things you should avoid when selecting your hand sanitizers and why.

  1. Methanol

  • FDA has warned that many hand sanitizers labeled to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) were actually tested positive for methanol contamination.
  • Methanol is toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested, and it can be life-threatening.
  • Methanol can dehydrate the skin and result in dermatitis to the affected region.
  • Other effects of methanol exposure can cause nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death.
  • So make sure to select hand sanitizers that are approved by governing bodies to ensure good quality control.

  1. False and Misleading Labels

  • Unproven claims that they can prevent the spread of viruses such as COVID-19
  • False claims that they can provide prolonged protection (e.g., up to 24 hours)
  • Fraudulently marketed as “FDA-approved”. FDA does not approve any hand sanitizers.
  • So make sure to select hand sanitizers that are sold by regulated brands and companies.

  1. Insufficient Amount of Alcohol

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends consumers to use an alcohol-based sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol (ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol)
  • So make sure to select hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol. If they don’t, discard them, regardless of how cheap they are or how good they smell or feel.
